Lions seem to spend most of their time sleeping and doing very little. It is always a bit of a gamble when deciding whether to stick with the sleeping lions or move on to try and find something else to watch and photograph. We came across a pride of lions one afternoon in the Masai Mara – they weren’t doing much but as the sun started to go down we decided to stick with them as they tend to get active during this time. I was delighted when at some point they all started roaring, not only because this is my favourite sound on safari but it also gave me something a bit different to photograph – this young male was a particularly enthusiastic participant in the roaring performance, you can clearly see he is giving it his all!
